Two Million Gallon Storage Water Tank Under Construction

April 5, 2010

The San Patricio Municipal Water District is constructing a new 2 million gallon ground storage tank on County Road 1169 about 2 miles northwest of Gregory-Portland High School.

The foundation of the 180-foot diameter concrete tank was poured in early February. The walls were erected from tilt-up panels which rest on top of a special membrane that acts as a seal.

The domed concrete roof was poured as a single reinforced piece in March.

The walls were wrapped in bands of wire to add strength and covered with protective layers of shotcrete.

The tank will hold treated water to be distributed to Portland, Taft, Odem, Rincon Water Supply Corp. and other customers in central San Patricio County.

The tank installation is one component of an ongoing $20 million expansion project that will increase system reliability, allow greater control of drinking water
quality and provide capacity to meet incremental demand growth in the District’s service area. A similar tank is being built at the Water District treatment complex located on Highway 361 between Gregory and Ingleside.
